The Chicago Fire may be Major League Soccer's second biggest attraction.

With the regular season now in the books, it is confirmed that the Men in Red have finished the 34-game campaign with the second-highest total road game attendance, trailing only Lionel Messi's Inter Miami.

Across 17 MLS road games, the Fire totaled a remarkable 420,840 fans in attendance (24,755 per game) – only Inter Miami managed more. The so-called "Messi Effect" was undoubtedly at the heart of it, pushing the Herons to a total of 701,327 spectators across 17 matches (an average of over 41,000).

While Robert Lewandowski alone won't be attributed to the Fire's big road game numbers, he was certainly a factor. Certain matches – most notably the August draw with the New York Red Bulls – drew huge numbers of Polish spectators in particular, with an overwhelming majority of those in attendance solely present to watch the 38-year-old center forward play.

Other factors also contributed to the high road game turnout, including the league-wide bump in interest following this summer's home World Cup. The Fire benefited from taking part in several road games at NFL stadiums in the second half of the season, with Lewandowski on the roster, including games against Seattle, Charlotte, New England, and Atlanta. Several games – including the games at New York and Seattle – were those teams' season high attendance to that point.

Although not a key factor, the Fire have also consistently had a not-insignificant presence from traveling fans. This is particularly meaningful considering the Men in Red haven't had a single road game within a five-hour drive in the entire regular season, with Cincinnati and Columbus the only remotely close league opponents. Several dozen fans traveled as far as Commerce City, Colorado last week for the final road game, despite the game being nearly 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) away from Soldier Field.

LAFC drew the third-highest total road attendance, falling just short of the Fire by 3,958 fans. The Black-and-Gold's regular seaosn finale in Seattle drew 40,171 spectators, bringing the race for second right down to the wire.

Miami's combined home-and-away attendance for the year was 1,149,323, while the Fire's was a still-very-impressive 859,751. It's the highest total attendance in club history, and was aided by the fact that they set their own home attendance record for the fourth consecutive season.
