The Chicago Fire have signed central defender Andreas Hanche-Olsen from Mainz 05. His contract runs through the 2030/31 MLS season.
Hanche-Olsen, 29, joins the Fire after three-and-a-half seasons in the Bundesliga. He is a Norwegian international and has 22 caps for the national team since his debut in 2020. Hanche-Olsen has not played a game since December 2025 due to a string of injuries and previously underwent knee surgery in June of last year.
Hanche-Olsen was not a part of the 20-man squad for Mainz’s Bundesliga opener on Saturday or their DFB-Pokal first-round tie last week. He has fallen to sixth on the center back depth chart at the Karnevalsverein, so a move away made sense for him personally as well.
With 67 appearances in Germany’s top flight for Mainz, Hanche-Olsen is a signing for the here and now, and brings plenty of high-level experience to the Fire locker room. The Fire sit in 3rd in the Eastern Conference after storming through the month of August so far, and are aiming to win their first MLS Cup since 1998 – something that is now highly realistic for the first time in many years.
Center back was a position of strength for the Fire for the first half of 2026. New U-22 signing Mbekezeli Mbokazi was a revelation as a left-footed center back, with the South African being named to the MLS All-Star team before enjoying a breakout World Cup with Bafana Bafana. However, a major thigh injury has kept him out since mid-July, and even if he can return in 2026, that may not be until deep in the playoffs.
The signing comes right at the end of the transfer window as the Fire looked to retool and strengthen in time for the final stretch of the MLS season. With a real shot at winning a title this season for the first time in nearly 30 years, Gregg Berhalter’s team is working to put all the pieces in place to make it a reality.
Jack Elliott and Joel Waterman have largely been the go-to pairing since Mbokazi’s injury, but Hanche-Olsen will immediately be in position to compete for starts. Sam Rogers is the other center back currently available.
With the signing of Hanche-Olse, the Fire now complete the set of having players from all four continental Nordic countries. The Bodø-born center back joins Philip Zinckernagel (Denmark), Anton Salétros (Sweden), and Robin Lod (Finland) as players from the Northern European region. There is no present indication that the Fire are also targeting players from Iceland or the Faroe Islands.
The Fire have until September 2nd to finalize any transfers as that is when the MLS window officially closes. Free agents can still be registered until the roster freeze on October 9th.
