The Chicago Fire's Dylan Borso has been loaned to Scottish second-tier club Greenock Morton, MIR97 Media understands. He will join teammate Christopher Cupps for the rest of the year.
Borso, 20, signed with the Fire first team in December 2024 after impressing for Wake Forest for several months. He is a product of the Fire's academy, having spent his whole development there prior to his lone semester in college.
The move benefits both Borso, who will be put outside of his comfort zone and play in an overseas professional environment for the first time; it will also aid Morton financially as the Fire will cover his full salary. Morton are battling relegation to the third tier and are in a perilous financial state, so the arrival of two free, young, American players will give them a much-needed boost.
Borso came up through the academy as a midfielder, but enjoyed his Wake Forest purple patch as an inverted winger and started out wide after returning to Chicago.
This season, he has been used mostly as a fullback, a position where his professional future likely lies. He most prominently appeared for 62 minutes off the bench in his MLS debut against the Columbus Crew in March and was named man of the match, but has not made a first team matchday squad since before the World Cup break.
Morton play a 4-2-3-1 shape, so Borso could be used either as a winger or a right back. Given that it is a club fighting for survival in every sense of the word, there will be significant pressure placed on the whole squad, including their two young loanees who will have an introduction to that kind of setting for the first time in their careers. It is an experience that they certainly would not get playing in MLS Next Pro, so this spell in Scotland should be helpful from a developmental standpoint.
The move does not open a roster slot for the Fire as they are still paying his full salary.
