CHICAGO — The Chicago Fire have signed left back Andrew Gutman to a new three-year contract running through the end of the 2028/29 season.
Gutman, who turns 30 this fall, started his career with the Fire Academy, but declined to sign with the first team. He bounced around several MLS clubs before the Fire eventually traded for him to return home for the 2024 season. The Fire are the only club he has spent more than two seasons.
“Andrew has a special connection to the club and this city,” Head Coach Gregg Berhalter said Saturday. "He understands what it means to represent his hometown and takes great pride in doing so. His commitment to the club and professionalism are unwavering, and we are pleased to extend his contract.”
Though Gutman has consistently been one of MLS' best fullbacks on his day, his career has largely been affected by injuries. In his first season in Chicago, he made just 11 MLS appearances, owing to a major injury sustained less than two minutes into his debut. However, 2025 saw the Hinsdale native play more minutes than any other season in his pro career, totaling 2,870 minutes and starting all 34 MLS games for the Fire.
Gutman's numbers have also been impressive over the last two years; 2025 saw him record a career-high 10 assists and three goals. In 2026, Gutman has one league goal and two assists in 985 minutes; additionally, he scored a decisive goal against Necaxa in a 2-0 Leagues Cup win last week.
The new three-year contract sees Gutman remain at the Fire until he is 32 years old, meaning he will spend the rest of his prime at his boyhood team. The club also has young Serbian left back Viktor Radojević, who has served as Gutman's deputy this season and has started matches occasionally to him the starter some rest.
