CHICAGO — Today’s scheduled matchup between the Chicago Fire and Vancouver Whitecaps, in what would have been the first league game for both sides since MLS paused for the World Cup in May, has been postponed to October 6th due to air quality conditions. Smoke from Canadian wildfires has created hazardous conditions in a wide swath of North America, from New York through Toronto and Minnesota.
Air quality conditions in Chicago worsened throughout the day, exceeding the US Soccer Federation's recommended threshold for canceling or postponing matches.
At 1PM CT, AQI is up to 395. USSF recs say cancel/postpone if >200 Spoke to ER doc ‒ biggest issue likely to be player health. Fans will be affected but unlikely to need immediate attention at SF as long as most-at risk wouldn't attend. Says health issues come up in days AFTER exposure starts.

The game was slated to be team record-signing Robert Lewandowski’s MLS debut two days after the Polish superstar was unveiled in Chicago. The match would have pitted Lewandowski against his former Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Müller, who joined Vancouver last summer.

The decision to postpone the game was made in the early afternoon, not long after the Chicago Park District, which also owns and operates Soldier Field, evacuated beaches along Lake Michigan. The postponement was made around 2:30 p.m and announced at 3:21, just over four hours before the scheduled kickoff.
The game, plus a postgame concert with DJ duo Two Friends, had made it a hot ticket in Chicago, leading to brisk ticket sales and an anticipated attendance of nearly 35,000. According to a Fire statement posted on social media, the Two Friends concert is also being postponed, with “more details to come at a later date,” suggesting it may take place separately from the rescheduled game.
The postponement is the first time that a Fire home match has had to be moved due to air quality concerns. In 2023, several sporting events across North America, including games in the NWSL, WNBA and MLB, had to be rescheduled or postponed due to hazardous wildfire smoke. Chicago has been affected by wildfire smoke more often in recent years as global warming has been increasing the number and severity of major forest fires.
The rescheduled date – October 6th – falls on the final day of the first international break of the fall. This means there is a possibility that players on both teams, including Lewandowski and Chris Brady for the Fire and Sebastian Berhalter for Vancouver, may miss out. The match was moved to October, not this weekend, due to ongoing concerns about air quality and Soldier Field’s concert/event schedule.
The new date falls on a Tuesday, four days before another home match against New York City FC. It means the Fire will play at home three times within eight days, as they will also face the Philadelphia Union on October 14th. The new date is also two days after the Chicago Bears will face the New York Jets at Soldier Field.
The Fire’s next game is on Wednesday against Inter Miami, as they travel to Florida for the first time this MLS season. Lewandowski will, therefore, likely make his debut in Miami. However, the hosts are expected to be without Lionel Messi and Rodrigo de Paul due to Argentina’s participation in Sunday’s World Cup final.
