Noah Allen's move to the Chicago Fire is now official, with the Greek-American defender announced as a new Fire player this morning.
Due to this deal's fairly unique structure, at least for Major League Soccer, both clubs had to wait until late Wednesday evening to learn that the move had recieved clearance from the league office. In the end, the necessary approval was granted and paperwork was filed ahead of the transfer deadline.
As reported ahead of yesterday's deadline, Allen is joining the Fire on an initial loan until the end of the season, which includes an option to purchase his contract for $3 million in a cash-for-player trade. He will be an Under-22 Initiative player, replacing Viktor Radojević in a like-for-like swap as the Serbian youth international moves north of the border on loan to CF Montréal.
Allen, who turned 22 this season, is primarily a left back, but has had no clear pathway to regular starting minutes at the position in Miami over the last three years; the Herons have spent heavily on left-sided full backs, bringing in Champions League- and EURO-winning defender Jordi Alba in 2023, and replacing him with ex-Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Manchester United starter Sergio Reguilón in 2026.
Last season, Allen starred down the stretch for Miami as a left center back; in possession, he was part of a nominal back three with Alba bombing up the field, while out of possession, he was one of two center backs. Allen started in that kind of left center back role in the MLS Cup as Miami defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1.
Coincidentally, Allen made his MLS debut against the Fire in 2022, featuring at left back in both teams' season opener at DRV PNK Stadium. He will be available for a debut this Saturday when Gregg Berhalter's team travel to BMO Field to face Toronto FC, but could make his home Fire debut against Miami on Wednesday.
