Lewy Cleared To Play: Chicago Fire Acquire International Slot

The Fire paid dearly for their 12th international slot.

The Chicago Fire announced that they have acquired an international slot from FC Cincinnati in exchange for $350,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM). The gives the Chicago Fire 12 international slots, clearing the way for Robert Lewandowski to make his Fire debut in tonight's scheduled match against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field.

The amount of GAM, which allows teams to essentially extend their salary cap, is relatively high by historical standards: ahead of the 2023, the Fire acquired a slot for the full season for $175,000 in GAM plus a second-ground draft pick.

That amount was relatively flat from previous seasons: Early in 2019, the Fire sent a total of $200,000 in allocation money to Minnesota United in exchange for a slot.

This year, however, prices have gone up: In February, the Fire traded a total of $850,000 in GAM, split between 2026 and 2027, to Colorado for two slots. A day later, the Fire shipped $350,000 in GAM to the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for an additional slot. Those transactions were for the full year, however, while this most recent transaction only covers the remaining part of 2026.

The price increases have been driven by factors inside and outside the league. Internally, the ability for teams to transform up to $3 million from each player sale into the currency, combined with the creation of an intraleague cash transfer ("cashfer") market has led to inflation of the league currency in recent years.

Broader trends in the United States have also weighed on the market: Permanent residents (refugees or Green Card holders) are considered domestic for roster purposes, but changes in visa timelines, and possibly shifting attitudes towards acquiring permanent residency in the United States, have meant that comparatively fewer international arrivals currently have Green Cards.

The Fire in particular have acquired players from countries in Europe where tax treatment is highly unfavorable to citizens if they acquire permanent residency in another country. Switzerland and Belgium are amongst the countries that make acquiring a Green Card financially damaging to players.

The price the Fire paid to Cincinnati also reflects the fact that it is early in the transfer window, with teams able to acquire players through early September. Many teams are also making moves to acquire talent from overseas, hoping that the World Cup hosted in North America will help with recruitment of top targets.

The Fire now hold 12 international slots, and are fully roster compliant — with an asterisk. André Franco is on the short-term injury reserve, which frees up the roster and international slot he would otherwise need.

For him to resume play, the Fire will need to open up an international slot, either by trading with another team, loaning, selling or trading an international player on their roster, or by having a player acquire permanent residency.

With the Fire continuing to work on additional deals to strengthen the team roster, it's likely that additional transactions are likely before the transfer window closes on September 2nd.
